Sun conjunct Mars in Capricorn, January 1-16

The astrology of Renee Good's passing

January’s major transit thus far: a Sun-Mars conjunction in Capricorn, exact within 27 minutes of orb, at the time of Renee Good’s death on January 7, with Jupiter in close opposition. Jupiter and the Sun in hard aspect with Mars are strikingly representative of aggression, if not violence, among astrological archetypes.

The chart of the moment of Good’s death (time from Wikipedia):

What’s remarkable in this chart: the perfect trine (at a very rare zero-minute-orb) between Eris, who I see here as representing righteous rage, and Pallas Athena, the Hellenistic goddess of wise strategy and insight. Perhaps Good’s death can help us find wisdom around how to address, and ultimately heal, the violence now permeating this country. The path forward doesn’t traffic in outdated patriarchal “might makes right” ideologies—instead, it involves finding ways to prevent violence. Becca Good’s response to her wife’s death rises above pettiness, reflecting this stance:

Renee lived by an overarching belief: there is kindness in the world and we need to do everything we can to find it where it resides and nurture it where it needs to grow. Renee was a Christian who knew that all religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole. …

We were raising our son to believe that no matter where you come from or what you look like, all of us deserve compassion and kindness. … I am now left to raise our son and to continue teaching him, as Renee believed, that there are people building a better world for him. That the people who did this had fear and anger in their hearts, and we need to show them a better way. …

We thank you for ensuring that Renee’s legacy is one of kindness and love. We honor her memory by living her values: rejecting hate and choosing compassion, turning away from fear and pursuing peace, refusing division and knowing we must come together to build a world where we all come home safe to the people we love.

Becca’s full statement is available here. It’s eerie, seems no coincidence, her name is Good. The universe works in mysterious ways. Yet it goes without saying that it should not take the death of an empathetic white woman to prompt concerted, active response to the increasingly overwhelming violence and militarization permeating our civic spaces. Let’s hope—and act to ensure, to whatever extent feels safe for each of us—her death leads to what her name represents. No one, anywhere, should ever be exposed to the lawlessness exhibited in her death and those of many equally heart-rending others in a democracy that ostensibly reflects and respects the rule of law.

The very close Sun-Mars conjunction that, to my mind, reflects this senseless violence lasted for about two weeks, through the first half of January, using a 2-degree orb. It won’t pass the 15-degree orb recommended by Rick Tarnas for mundane astrology until February 25.

See my next post, coming soon, on this year’s Saturn-Neptune conjunction. I’m sorry to share this, but I don’t think this is the end of sad news. Brace yourself.
